walkthrough for newbies

Rob, could you provide a quick walkthrough of what you expect from/by new arrivals to the Rally ?

For example, I'm riding in after a 12 hrs on the road, roll up to the Expo gate B, what next ?

Do I keep riding up to the Rally registration area, park my bike there, go in, register, pay etc. then get back on bike and go find a camping spot ?

or do you want us to park in another designated parking area, walk to the registration desk, etc. etc. ?

Great question.

Well let's see.

Ok, so it is Thursday evening and you have just rolled up after a long day. Chances are there will be a little traffic at registion which will give you a chance to unwind. A volunteer may offer you some bottled water.

If you pre-registered just go to the pre-reg line and get your stuff. If you didn't you will need to take a moment to fill out a form, there are plenty of tables, chairs and pens handy. Don't be in a huge hurry, the registration folks are wonderful and are full of good advice.

After you register you will pass though the gate and be in the rally. You now have something like 100 acres of green space to decide where to set up your tent.

Depending on when you left you may want to focus on getting your tent up before dark. If it is a bit earlier and you have issues with your bike perhaps a quick trip to the servicing vendors would be in order.

If not just ride around the site until you find a nice spot to call home. There is a "Town Square" with plenty of food vendors and a beer garden under a tent. The closer you set up to this center the louder it will be.

We do not have a designated quiet area because there is green space so far from the center that it will be naturally quiet.

Chances are you will find a spot near some other riders, introduce yourself and say hello. Once you get your tent set up I would go for a walk.

As a first time visitor I would suggest you make a bee line to hospitality and the Ambassador's tent. I understand the Ambassadors will have a special welcome for first time participants.

I would try to time my arrival for no later than five pm if possible, to have some time to get comfortable before dark. Of course this is not always possible and if you do find yourself setting up in the dark there is a very good chance your new neighbors will be helping you by making a "flashlight circle".

If you find youself behind schedule and arrive after registration is closed security will take some basic information and you will be welcome to find a spot.

As far as what is expected, I really don't expect anything from you other than a positive attitude. The rally is what each person makes of it, for themselves and the people around them. I happen to really enjoy the rally and the people I have met. Rather than place expectations I hope your experience would be equally positive.
