Utah Weekend

I have not seen any activity on the MOA event in Utah.

Any body going??

Any suggestions on food and goog routes?

I was wondering the same thing. I have not been to a rally and this looks like a great location, a little closer to home. Would be nice if a few of us showed up!

I'll be there. Also attending as of today are Jackie & Chris Hughes, Ted Moyer and most probably Greg Feeler.

Hope to see lots of you there.

I'll be there - my first MOA event.

Riding down from Seattle Thu & Fri, stopping off somewhere around Twin Falls, ID for an overnight on the way down, and probably Boise on the way back. It's around 1100ish miles each way for me.

Cedar City is nice;

Been through there so many times, cannot count'em all:). Its right on the edge of the mountains and very pretty around there, especially East of town, you'll find tons of premier riding and parks. Utah has so many Nat.Parks, its probably 2nd to none for this. Me, can't go:(. Would if possible, however as its a great ride there. Randy

Barring an unexpected shoot popping up I'm going to be there.

For you guys that have not been to this area of Utah you're in for such a treat! I'm looking forward to some serious exploration myself.

Four of us will be stopping over Friday night on our way back home to NorCal from an extended ride through AZ/CO/UT the previous week. Hope to meet a few of y'all before we have to take off Saturday morning. :thumb

It is surprising how little publicity this has received since its coming up so quickly and when compared to the ink/bytes on east coast events. Having some experinece with event planning, whomever is/was the "fire" behind this offering may have withdrawn. At any rate, a smathering of EXR riders will be there no matter what size the event. The smaller gatherings have their advantages too. ;)

I called today and found out the event is sold out! That sucks... I'm new and didn't know they had a limit of 100 attendees. :scratch:scratch:scratch

Considering I'm a few hours away in Las Vegas it's a bummer as I was excited about it being in my "backyard".

:violin

If anyone here has a ticket or whatever they issue that you can't use or if someone bails at the last moment please call or email me and I'll take it.

You can still go to Cedar City Utah and ride the same places.
You just can't give them the $79.00 for you dinner. :dunno

There were a few cancellations so I'm registered now. Arriving Thursday night, departing Monday morning.

Hopefully there will be a GS / gravel road group?

Well, I'm on my way back from the event (overnighting in Boise before returning to Seattle tomorrow), and I must say I think it was a very well run event and lots of fun. I think I'll have put somewhere around 2400-2500 miles on the bike on this trip by the time I get home.

In the end there were roughly 80ish attendees, someone mentioned that there were some last minute cancellations.

In attendance from the MOA were Greg Feeler (new Prez), Tom Buttars (treasurer), Jackie & Chris Hughes (VP, and Ambassadors), and someone from ON whose name has now escaped me. Apologies for anyone else I might've forgotten.

Three group rides were offered. The most popular by far was a ride down to Kolob Canyons, through Zion (though not enough time for the shuttle bus ride up the canyon), up to Bryce Canyon (stop for lunch at Ruby's Inn), and then back by way of a very nice twisty Rt. 143 to Cedar Breaks Monument (elevation ~10300ft.) and a very rapid downhill through Cedar Canyon back into Cedar City. I think that ride, split into two groups, probably accounted for around a third to half of those in attendance. There were only a few takers for a somewhat longer ride as well, and the remainder were simply charting their own course for the day.

We were briefly stopped on Rt. 143 by an enormous flock of sheep being herded across the road. Coming over the rise about half a mile away, at first I couldn't figure out what I was seeing. I thought a truck had spilled a load of something across the road, or perhaps it was flooded... fuzzy white indistinct blobs... wait, those are SHEEP! Had to stop and wait for them to meander their way across the road. Got a few pics, maybe I'll upload them after I get back home if they turned out.

All in all, I met some very nice folks this weekend at the event, and the MOA staff were wonderful hosts and ride leaders. Very memorable.

It was announced at dinner that one rider went down during the course of the day, bike totaled and rider sustained "non-life-threatening injuries", but no more details were available at the time, nor did I hear anything more before I left. Hope the rider was not too seriously damaged. Someone from the Las Vegas area, I believe.

My assessment: Great fun and well run. I sincerely hope they do as they intend, and run more of these events around the country for others to take advantage of. I'd certainly do it again.

We were on our way back from a week and a half on the road and stopped in at the Weekend Getaway Friday night. Met a few MOA officers and a good number of fine riding folks. It was a great location with an excellent restaurant right in the hotel. We heard that 'someone' was getting married back in Missouri that Saturday and this accounted for the lack of MOA staff attendance and perhaps more broad publicity. There was also some discussion of future western events and the potential to repeat Cedar City next year. With a little more notice I think it would blossom quite nicely. Overall it appeared to be an excellent first effort.

Our return route had us on US 50 in Nevada. We received some excellent advise from Reno area riders at the Getaway to fill up whenever possible. This turned out to be good juju as indeed several of the small towns along the way no longer had operating fuel stations. There was one dry spell about 160 miles long. Of course, we passed along all the road info we'd accumulated about southern UT over the past week. There's a benefit to being in the club beyond the tangible.

Thanks!
