Where to buy Breakdown "Cover" in France

I can't answer your question, but unlike the US, there are not vast networks of affiliated repair shops (Like AAA), and dependent on where you are, the help from some agency's might be 1/2 a day away, or more.
That said, 2 wheel transportation is VERY prevalent, and there are shops everywhere, that could likely get you on the road quickly and cheaply, in the event of a minor breakdown.

that breakdown cover--Euro-wide--from ADAC (German Auto Club) is available/ included only if you purchase a full year's ADAC, so-called "ADACPlus", membership,

At 80 Euros per year, that's worth it if you do a lot of riding in Europe, but a bit steep for just a few weeks roadside assistance cover in (only?) France.
drswift: part of the answer may depend on some details. Is this friend's bike registered/ plated in France ? What/ who is the provider of the basic vehicle insurance for this bike? Is it possible that the (French?) vehicle insurance may already include some roadside assistance ?
The French equivalent of AAA, http://www.automobile-club.org/, may or not include roadside assistance if you buy some level of full membership, but I'd be very surprised if it's possible to buy roadside assistance only cover for a few weeks; the French market and geo scale just wouldn't support such a stand-alone product.

Yes, I buy an ADAC membership at 80 euros/year for my California registered R11RS (which I keep at a friend's place in Germany). The coverage is great, I think -- I have yet to need it, fortunately! -- including transporting your broken down bike from anywhere in Europe to a location you specify, up to 5 nights in hotels and 5 days of auto rental. As my RS has 212,000 miles on the odo, I feel more comfortable spending the ~$110, even though I'm only using it for 4-5 weeks. YMMV.
ADAC also sells "green card" liability insurance for foreign vehicles, that is good throughout Europe. This is a completely different product, and you don't have to be an ADAC member to buy it. This is what I buy so that I am legal to ride my CA bike in Europe. Unfortunately, this has gotten very expensive in the last couple years. I can recall paying 22 euros/month, then 44/month, but in the last couple years, it has been 100 euros/month of coverage!
