Transmission rebuild '52 R68

I'm looking to pick up a '52 R68 in another state, but the owner states that the transmission has a broken kick starter. Seems when you move the lever ominous sounds (broken parts) come out and the kicker does not grab. It is not, apparently simply slipping on the shaft.

This is the hand/foot shift transmission and I assume with a broken kicker, that the entire gearbox is suspect and should be overhauled.

Is getting these overhauled a big deal? Are all parts available? Does this problem mean the trans is junk?

Thoughts?
