Using oil

Hi, Mike,
I don't know if it's "normal" or not, but my '96 K1100LT with 111k miles does use and has used a quart every 3k to 4k miles, and has done so since I bought it with 14299 miles on it. I used Castrol GTX 20w50 for the first 30k miles or so, and Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic ever since. I add oil as necessary (when I can't see any in the window) and change it and filter yearly or at 10k miles, whichever comes first.

Thanks Phil for the info. I heard this from another K LT owner but I didn't believe it. Maybe it is normal. Does your fuel pump squeel real loud when you ride 150 miles or so. Mine does. It's embarrasing when a Harley pulls up beside you at a red light and he can hear your bike squeeling over his bike. Mike

I know for most cars (and the K engine is basically a car engine) a quart every 1000 miles is considered the maximum allowable consumption, at least traditionally. So you're probably okay, although I can certainly understand wishing it used less.

Three K models:

- K100 never used a drop.

- K75 used about a half quart in 3,000 miles.

- K1100 seems on track for around a half- quart per 1,000 or so.

Aggravating.

The K1100 series is known for burning more oil than the early K bikes. The K75 and K100 usually burn very little oil betwen changes.

using oil

Mike,
When I first bought my 1995 K11 it had 4,000 miles on it and was using about the same as yours is. It may be helpful to hear my bike now has 56,000 miles and the consumption is 100CC's per 1,000 miles.
The only problem is that on a long trip I have to take oil along because I will not use SJ auto oil in a BMW.
My former K100RS had 161,000 miles and it never used a drop; even on a extended high speed run of 41 minutes at very high speeds.
